The missus and i took a weekend away to Fredericksburg. (Note to self, publish a post about why i love Fredericksburg later). We spent the night in Austin and had breakfast before we arrived. As we were leaving, i had a few minutes by the restaurant door while the missus took care of some last minute details. (Is there a more delicate way to say that?)
So i started to hold the door open for people.
Mama taught me well.
A couple of short elderly ladies, then an older man who wasn't dressed to well, but was polite. A couple - the husband seemed to have had a stroke, (He walked very slowly with a cane while his wife helped him, and then i looked up and saw a face i immediately recognized. He was a hero.
i was going to hold the door for Darrell Royal.
If you're not from the state of Texas (like the missus), you may ask the same question she did.
"Who's he again?"
And in a moment of sacrilege i responded, "He's like God. He coached the Longhorns to two national championships in the 60's. They named the stadium for the man!"
i was elated! i got to hold the door open for someone who was like God! i started calling people to tell them "i just held the door for Darrell K Royal!"
Naturally, i started to be convicted of my comparison of a football coach to God. Why was i more excited about holding the door for Darrell Royal than i was for the short ladies, the man who wasn't so well dressed, and the man with the stroke? And then Matt 25 came to mind. Jesus says "whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me."
i did hold the door open for God. But God wasn't Darrell Royal, God was the two short ladies. God was the elderly man who was unkempt. God was the man with a stroke and his patient wife.
i hope next time i hold the door open for someone i'm as excited as if i were holding the door for Darrell Royal.
The spiritual musings of a guy who tries - but often fails - to put himself third.

Welcome to the blog
So... i've had this domain name parked for a long time while a similarly named domain has taken off. So i've now decided to make use of it.
i was going to put some bio stuff here, but i don't know what to put in and what to leave out. Suffice to say this will be where i put my musings in my role as "spiritual pilgrim." It's been a long pilgrimage. i hope to share some of the stories here and the new ones as they happen.
